The ‘One You Kent’ Weight Management Service - run by Maidstone Borough Council for Kent County Council - is once again being offered at Maidstone Leisure Centre, helping people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more to lose weight and feel great.

One You Kent has been running at the centre since 2010. The service even ran when the facility was closed due to COVID-19 lockdowns, as Fitness Instructor Louise Stevens offered sessions virtually via Skype.

Louise said: “I was proud of the work we did virtually during the COVID-19 lockdowns and was keen to carry on supporting people through what would have been a difficult time for many. Without access to the centre and the guidance we give, it would have been easy for people to lapse and stray from the programmes we’ve developed together.”

One You Kent is a great programme, which aims to help people struggling with weight management find a sustainable route to a healthier lifestyle. The programme lasts 12 weeks and includes target setting, gym induction, personal programmes, group exercise classes, nutritional seminars, weekly measurements to track progress, affordable access to full centre facilities and individual 1-1 time. Sessions run in the daytime and also in the evening, so people should easily be able to find a convenient time to attend.

Since 2010, One You Kent at Maidstone Leisure Centre has helped over 3,000 people towards healthier lifestyles. The programme is open to anyone who feels they want to make a positive change in their life – eating better, being more active and feeling great. Although the programme targets people with a BMI over 30, if there are spaces on the programme can open be opened up to people whose BMI is over 25.

Robert Garrett, from Maidstone commented: “Initially I didn’t really care about my physical health. As time went on, and as weight came off, my mental health started to improve. As that happened, I started to realise my physical health was improving too.”

“I’m now 21kg lighter than I was before, with the help of the weight management programme. Also, my mental health is a lot better, and my physical health is improving too.”

Robert continued: “Louise’s enthusiasm was infectious – if I was having a bad day, she would helped me get right back on track. I try to do 10km walks three to four times per week, and I do the course Mondays & Thursdays, and I also do the Actively Involved aquarobics which is more than I have ever done. I feel great. Thank you to Louise, and everybody involved.”

Jolanda Gjoni, Senior Public Health Officer at Maidstone Borough Council said: “It’s great to see that Maidstone Leisure Trust are supporting the One You Kent Weight management service. One You Kent Maidstone also deliver weight management programs in the community and online for those who are not able to, or not quite ready to join a program at the leisure centre, using the same referral pathway and follow up steps.
